All About My Favorite Topic... Me!
By Lucy Miranda Rabbit - December 2002
Hello, I'm Lucy a 4 year old Mini Lop and 7.8 pounds of pure fluffy fun! My story begins in Lake Hopatcong, NJ the town of my birth. According to the records that my new pet humans found on me, my birthday was sometime in November of 1998. When I was 3 months old, I
was adopted by my first pet human a young lady who currently resides in Sussex County NJ.
I wasn't to be an only bunny. There was already a resident rabbit living in the
apartment where I was to call home for the first four years of my life. The other bun was a four year old Netherlands Dwarf by the name of Smokey.
Since we're both girls, we fought like crazy for the first few weeks, then gradually began to tolerate each other. Finally we became exceptionally close friends. We hopped and played together, even shared cage space! Where Smokey went,
I always followed.
In most rabbit relationships, there is always a dominate bunny. In our case that was Smokey. To some it may seem odd since Smokey was but a 2 pound dwarf rabbit and here I am a 8 pound mini-lop! I didn't care, I just loved hanging
around with my new best friend!
We were together for four all to short years. Then one day during the summer of 2002, Smokey left this world after a short illness. I was so heartbroken and depressed. All of a sudden I turned from a happy young lady to a sulking mini
lop.
To make matters worse I wasn't exactly getting along with the new canine in town. I always got along with dogs, but this one and I we didn't exactly see eye to eye. In fact when this dog saw me, he wanted to invite me over for
lunch, with the main dish being me!! YIKES!!
So still mourning for the loss of my friend I was confined to one small room in the apartment to keep me out of the dog's way. My pet human at that time was working odd hours, and she an the dog were going on trips when they could. She
discovered that she could not spend the time she wanted to spend with me and give me the care that I deserved.
Late that summer, she decided that she would try to find me a new home, but not just ANY home. One that would keep me indoors, give me love and attention, and treat me like a member of the family.
She had interviewed four or five families in the area and all indicated that they were going to keep me outside in a hutch! YUCK!!! That's not the place for a beautiful girl like me who is trying to get over a major loss in her life!
Then one day in late September, my pet human's mom learned of a
family who might fit the bill! They even had the same bunny doctor that I have! However, they also were dealing with a loss of their
rabbit (A Holland Lop Named Edison)
much the same way I was. With both of us still licking our wounds from our losses, the time at that point just was not right.
On 4, November 2002 talk of my moving to that particular bunny savvy household was re-kindled. Arrangements were made via e-mail and on 10 November,2002 I said good bye to my first pet human and began my new life with my new family in Mine Hill.
As of this writing it has been almost a month since I left my first home and I'm getting along just fine! At first I was a bit on the timid side and
I still can be at times. But I have really come out of my shell of
late and now here, I feel like a queen!
Since I have great
litter box habits, I get free run of the same den that their Edison had once called home. My meals consist of two big servings of assorted greens
daily, all the hay I can devour (and I can eat a LOT of hay!) and plenty of fresh water.
Of course I get the occasional treat, usually just a little slice of
apple or peach.
My new pet humans have
discovered my biggest treat weakness: RAISINS! I just love them!
Want to be my best friend? Give me a few raisins and I'll follow you
around the den all night!
I had my first vet trip with my new bunny parents just two weeks ago and passed my exam with flying colors! I hated the car ride however!
I also have three cardboard boxes
on hand to indulge one of my favorite hobbies: Cardboard Box Demolition!
Just give me a good sized cardboard box and one afternoon, I'll show
you what I can do! My pet humans have to replace the boxes every
week!
I also hear stirrings about a new bunny friend for
me. I think he is actually here since I hear lots of hopping going on upstairs! We'll see how our meeting goes. Who knows this new rabbit may actually remind me of my best
friend, Smokey!
Above all I get the most important thing that any rabbit would want from their new family: Lots of attention, care and love!
