From Despair to A Caring Home
By Oliver Cuddles Edison Rabbit - December 2002
Hello my new name is Oliver Cuddles Edison Rabbit. I'm a 2 year old Holland Lop - Dwarf mix. My current pet humans named me Oliver in part because of my life story thus far. It sort of reflects the story of the fictional small orphan boy from the
Charles Dickens
story Oliver
Twist. My story is
somewhat the same, a melancholy beginning with a hopeful middle, ending with a brand new happy future for me.
I made my debut in the world in August of 2000 someplace in Jackson, NJ. I don't remember much of those early days and what my first family was like. All I know is that for some reasons still unknown to me, I was abandoned by them when
I was just 6 months old. It's something I still don't understand to this day. Perhaps I didn't meet some sort of expectation? Or did I do something wrong by just simply I growing
up from a bunny to a rabbit?
Since I'm a domestic rabbit, unlike my wild cousins, I don't know exactly what to do to survive out in the cold cruel world without someone there to help me. Hundreds of thousands of domestic rabbits and other pets, who were once
members of the family, are thrown out into the wild every year. Most of them die from exposure to the elements, starve, or since we bunnies are prey animals, become food for some predator! I'm sure I came close to that category!
I was lucky. Instead of becoming a statistic, my life changed for the
better!
Scared, cold, and untrusting of humans, I was hiding under some shrubs near a human home one day when I was discovered by the family that lived there. I was grabbed by one of them, I'm sure I put up a good fight with them too
before I was taken inside.
Little did I know that this was the prelude to my new life.
The homeowners turned me over to the local Animal Control Department in Jackson, NJ. Since they do not deal with exotic animals, ( yes friends we rabbits are considered exotic animals) I was placed into the care of
Kind Heart Rabbit Rescue
in near by Cream Ridge, NJ.
Kind Heart Rescue is run by a caring woman who loves animals and us rabbits. I must have looked like a really sorry rabbit when I first arrived. She took me in fed me my first good meal in a long time, and examined me. She discovered
that I was suffering from skin mites and took all the appropriate actions to eliminate them. Then the real challenge started. How transform me from a scared untrusting animal back to what I once was, a bunny that could become a member of a family.
After months of hard work with me, my gentle and curious disposition began to return. I was then ready to be adopted by a human family once more but this time by a family that would have to pass Kind Heart Rescue's
standards! The screening process in place would make sure that the people adopting me would give me a loving home!
The adoption announcement along with my photo was placed on a web site called Petfinder.com. The web site is a database of all sorts of animals from all over the United States just waiting for adoption! It would be just a matter of
time before the right person came calling for me.
That "right person" was found in November of 2002. It had been just 6 weeks since my current family had lost the first house rabbit they had ever taken in; a handsome Holland Lop named Edison. There
were already plans well underway to adopt a beautiful female mini - lop rabbit named Lucy from an associate at work, but they both decided that somehow it was going to take two bunnies to fill the void left by Edison's loss.
That's where I came in! My current pet humans saw my add on Petfinder.com and contacted Kind Heart Rescue. After going through a screening process, my foster mom decided that she had found the perfect home for me! On 17 November 2002,
my foster mom drove me to my new home in Mine Hill NJ.
I LOVE my new home! I have a bunch of toys I get to jump into and play with, two salad and pellet servings a day and as much timothy hay as I want! I also get something that every rabbit needs: a lot of attention and love!
My new bunny parents delight in my personality. They say I am one of the most gentle creatures they have ever seen.
Even when I'm given raisins or treats, I don't grab them, I gently take them from my pet humans.
I have a very quiet and reserved personality but I do ask for head
scratches! I am curious about my environment however, and that is a
trait that sometimes gets me into a bit of trouble!
I am also trying to get along with my new sister,
Lucy. I'm open to the idea but Lucy has some other plans! Given time and intervention from my pet humans,
I'm sure eventually
we will become friends!
